Diabetes is a term used to describe several diseases
in which a person's blood glucose is high. It may be because the body does not
make insulin, doesn't make enough insulin, or the body cannot respond to the insulin that
is present or both.
There are three major types of diabetes:
1) Type 1 Diabetes
The body does not produce insulin. This was once referred to as
insulin-dependent diabetes , juvenile
diabetes, or early-onset diabetes. People usually develop type 1
diabetes before their 40th year, often in early adulthood or teenage years but
can develop at any age. Only about 10% of all diabetes is Type 1.
2) Type 2 Diabetes
Type 2 diabetes is a combination of the body not making enough insulin and not
responding to the insulin that is present.
This diabetes develops while a woman is pregnant. Some of
the hormones produced during pregnancy make a woman less sensitive to the
insulin she makes. This diabetes generally goes away after delivery but the
woman will be at higher risk of developing diabetes later in life if lifestyle
changes are not made.
